FACE ON YER FOOD

I’m a pretty picky eater, so I’ve always been very good at playing with my food. And I’ve always enjoyed trying to spot faces on random objects (did you know face pareidolia used to be a symptom of psychosis?! Anyway… ).

During the first lockdown, for no apparent reason, I brought these two skills together. It helped me mark each week and gave me a reason to smile when things were pretty bleak.

Here’s what I’d describe as the more naive phase in my food ‘art’ career:

Here you see my ‘craft’ develop in perfect equilibrium with my ever-increasing boredom. Each piece most likely capturing the intense, complex emotions felt by the artist in that precise moment.

The more scrambled the brain, the more abstract the art.” Poppy Cumming-Spain, 2021

More recently, I moved on to sculptures which either include or bear some relation to my original subject: the face.

I’m still making these faces, although not every week. Might make them into one of those books which lives next to people’s toilets, one day…

Who doesn’t want to have food smiling at them while they’re having a poo?!
